History & Impact Since 1995

History & Impact Since 1995

The Magnolia area was first settled in 1845 with the establishment of Mink Prairie, named after a local farmer who built a homestead there. By 1850, the town’s name was shortened to Mink. Following the Civil War, an influx of settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee led to rapid population growth, prompting the construction of a post office in 1885.

In 1902, the International-Great Northern Railroad, now operated by Union Pacific, extended its line north of Mink, drawing residents closer to the new railway route. The relocated community was initially named Melton, in honor of a prominent landowner, but frequent mix-ups with the town of Milton led officials to rename it Magnolia. In 1903, Mink’s post office officially moved to Magnolia, marking the transition as the original town faded into history.
